When I first started my career in recruitment ten years ago, I was responsible for hiring hundreds of new-graduate and early-career talent at a large Canadian bank. The work was incredibly rewarding; connecting students to jobs that would change the course of their careers felt (and still feels) so meaningful. But as I started to get a peek behind the HR-curtain, the stark difference in interview and earning performance between the candidates with connections and without was . . . daunting.
Unsurprisingly, the candidates with family in the industry and Ivy League education had significantly higher pass rates in interviews, higher rates of success in negotiations and ultimately . . . got paid more. In an effort to help level the playing field, I started to post quick recruitment tips and tricks online in hopes that all folks, but especially women and BIPOC communities, would have access to information that could change their professional lives.
In a matter of weeks, these tips gained me hundreds of thousands of interactions. And today, I have an audience of over 3 million followers who come to me as a source of no-fluff career advice to help them get ahead without losing their mind.
Clock in: No-BS Advice for Getting Ahead in Your Career (Without Losing Your Mind) is a step by step guide to help folks identify their ideal career path, apply for jobs, interview.
