She received her B.A. in English at Vassar College, having spent a semester studying Irish folklore at University College Cork and having written her thesis on the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. Juliana then continued on to New York City where she became a children's book editor.

Cary received her fine arts degree from Washington State University and has been an illustrator for some fifteen years. She is the illustrator of several children's books. She lives in Seattle with her husband and son, and their dog Rocket.
