Israel and Europe

An Appraisal in History

Look inside
"Israel is the product of Europe more than any other civilization.  Zionism from its inception was the Jews' ideological response specifically to European romantic nationalism, their political response to European anti-Semitism.  Since 1948, in Israel's nostalgia for the amplitude of European culture and in Europe's afflicted conscience for the Holocaust, in each side's political and economic vulnerability to Middle Eastern conflict, in the sensitivity of each to the other's perceived moral and diplomatic gravamen, Israel and Europe have found themselves linked in an often abrasive configuration of mutual dependence."

Israel and Europe follows the history of the modern state of Israel, from it early relationship with Great Britain, its original sponsor, to its unlikely partnership with Germany to its unstable policies towards Russia.  Dr. Sachar, author of thirteen earlier books on Middle Eastern and Jewish history, brings to life this complex and often dramatic relationship with penetrating scholarship, insightful analysis, and an unerring grasp of human - and national - motivations.

"A remarkable feat--clear, compelling and accessible--Critical background for any appreciation of the Jewish state" -The New York Times Book Review
