In Black No More, George Schuyler tells the story of Max Disher, a black man, insurance salesman, and rogue, transformed by science into a Mathew Fisher, a white man.  The ensuing adventures--Mathew seduces and marries a white woman, who had previously rejected him because he was black, and vaults to the leadership of the white supremacist group, "Knights of Nordica"--are a wickedly funny exploration of race in America, that strips it of all its self-serving masks and definitions.  As much as any other work to come out of the Harlem Renaissance, this novel is important  for any student of African American culture.

Black No More is the latest title to be included in Modern Library's Harlem Renaissance series, which also  includes The Crisis Reader, Infants of the Spring, and The Opportunity Reader.  It includes an Introduction by satirist Ishmael Reed.
George S. Schuyler (1895–1977) was a satirist, critic, and eminent African American journalist of the Harlem Renaissance. He became the first Black journalist to attain national prominence and was known for his controversial opinions.
